EPA Fuel Fills

Overview

The new requirements have caused changes in most current fuel fills. The fill used in the system must be sealed when closed to assure that vapors do not escape into the atmosphere. As a result of this, the EPA requires the cap must provide a means of indicating that it has been properly closed. This can be an audible clicking type noise or some sort of visual indication. Most fill manufacturers have designed new fills and caps or altered existing ones to meet these requirements.

Sealed Cap with Vacuum Pressure Relief Valve

Builders building to new requirements will be looking for sealed caps. When refueling is completed the cap is replaced and fumes are then forced through a carbon canister to atmosphere. Or, in a pressure relief system pressure builds up to above 1 psi before venting through a pressure relief valve to atmosphere. Depending on the refueling strategy, there will be either a vented fill or a non-vented fill, but in all cases the cap will be a sealed under normal operating conditions.

Attached Tether

Perko's Bulk Packed EPA style fills come with tethers attached to the fill body, but not to the cap. This eliminates the need to unscrew the tether before pressure testing a boat.

  1. Fills are packed with caps installed. Tethers are fixed in the fill bodies but not attached to the cap.
  2. Install the fill as indicated in the installation instructions.
  3. Once the pressure test is done, pull the tether and attachment ring out from the fill body and snap onto the cap by hand (see Diagram 1). The ring snaps over the ridge as indicated in Diagram 2.
  4. Once attached, the ring allows the cap to turn freely without binding or twisting the tether. See Diagram 3.
